Medical Hypnotherapy
History
Hypnosis has been used medically since the late 1700′s. From those times, Doctors have used hypnotic techniques and carried out painless operations successfully with no anaesthetic.
Hypnosis began to be used for more psychoanalytical purposes in the 1800′s. Even Sigmund Freud used this process until he developed his own therapeutic style. Freud spent many years trying to discredit hypnosis but latterly admitted it was a good method, just he was not good at it.
Probably one of the most significant influences on hypnosis was Dr. Milton Erickson (1901-1980). Having been paralysed by polio as a child he used self-hypnosis techniques to overcome the illness and went on to see over 30,000 patients in his years of practice.
Control of Pain
The main reason our patients request Medical Hypnotherapy is the control of chronic pain. They may have already tried various pain killing medications fron their GP with little success and some have even been down the route of pain killing injections. After trying these other interventions unsuccessfully, they are often left feeling frustrated and near the end of their tether with the pain itself.
An in depth case study is taken with full medical history. In some situations it may be beneficial to be in contact with your GP (with the patients permission) to clarify what medical diagnosis has been reached and to find out the results of any tests.
Your hypnotherapist will use a few techniques during your first session to start to teach you the skills of self-hypnosis so that you will be able to manage the pain at any time. After this initial meeting, they will work out an extensive treatment plan where you will work together over the coming weeks to reduce the pain itself, enable you to deal with it better and then finally to give you the skills and empower you to cope on your own.
Other Medical Conditions That Can Be Worked On With Hypnotherapy Include:-
